Entrapment?

Yesterday, I took my soup through to the living room to watch the rugby.
However, I had to leave the room to see someone about a dead cat, not ours, so was away for some time.
When I came back, I was looking forward to finishing my soup but my plate was empty!
So what had happened to it?
Had I actually finished it but forgotten about it?
Had it evaporated?
Had an alien landed and stolen it?
I could hardly sleep last night for thinking about it so I decided to try to solve the mystery today by recreating the scene.
Now I know!
