Day 16

Having explored Saumur thoroughly yesterday we headed out of town to visit Chateau Breze then Abbey of Fontevraud.

The main part of Chateau was interesting but far from grand but what made this one worth visiting was the chateau under the chateau - a series of caves where people lived, cooked, kept horses and made wine. Really fascinating.

We then headed to Abbey which was grand in scale. Eleanor of Aquataine, Henry II and Richard the Lionheart are all buried here. It was also used as prison in the 19th & 20th centuries.

We then headed to LeClerc to stock up on wine (and pineau du charante which I've developed a fondness for).
