Small Places

Point of Ardnamurchan

We drove out to the lighthouse at the Point of Ardnamuchan. It's one of the longest and most winding single track roads I have driven, with hardly a single straight stretch and a few blind summits. I have a new respect for the people who live at Kilchoan. For most shopping, it's two hours to Fort William, or the ferry to Tobermory.

The small hill in the distance, Corrachadh Mor, is the most westerly point on Great Britain mainland.

For a short while we had the outside of the lighthouse to ourselves, while the guide was inside with another party. We sheltered in the lee in a heavy shower, and the large raindrops looked more like hail as they went past. We got soaked when it was time to move round to the doorway. Please take a look at my extra too - a panorama from the top of the lighthouse.

Well worth a visit, despite the long drive.
