Restoring Silvergate Stream

A and I went to Blickling for a walk this morning but had to curtail it twice due to heavy rain that hadn't been forecast to arrive this morning. It's fortunate that they also have a nice cafe and shop!!

On the way out we noticed this work starting to restore Silvergate Stream which feeds the lake on the Estate before joining the River Bure, an internationally important and rare chalk stream that feeds into the Norfolk Broads National Park, which in turn supports 9 nature reserves and 28 Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The funding for the project comes from Postcode Earth Trust, a grant-giving trust funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The work will include channel, pond and floodplain meadow restoration to improve the condition of the stream. The creation of silt traps will help reduce soil entering the water and the addition of large woody debris and leaky dams will help trap sediment within the stream. So good to see maintenance work being done to improve the environment and the wildlife it supports.
