It was an exciting privilege to host a reception at Edinburgh Castle tonight to thank the members of the new Citizen’s Assembly of Scotland ( who are spending their first weekend of deliberation in the city) for agreeing to be part of this important democratic innovation.

There was huge energy , commitment and determination in the room and the two poems read by Scotland’s Makar Jackie Kay matched that mood to perfection.

More than one person called the evening historic - and so it was. Democracy steps up a gear......
