The Pepperpot

We got a bit lost in the woods today on the Tuesday Run. That was a bonus for me who had expressed a desire to visit the Pepperpot but it was not supposed to be on our route. Lovely views over Morecambe Bay. One of my walking companions who lives locally, had helped plan the routes today  and admitted she had never visited it before!.   You obviously have to be lost to find it.  I found the following on the internet:-“It was built by ……….(.a local builder) to commemorate the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. Apparently there was once a plaque telling the story of the monument, but this fell prey to vandals long ago and was never replaced.  During the Great War, soldiers were billeted at nearby Bleasdale House, a Red Cross hospital, and it is said that they planned to build a 'Salt Cellar' to keep the Pepperpot company, though nothing was ever done. In 1977 the idea was mooted again, this time the silver jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II being the proffered excuse, but nothing materialised, and we must live in hope of any future efforts”
And there's a geocache up here which we did find after checking about 4 trees.
