In the sixteenth century, Bideford was England's third largest port trading in tobacco, slaves and cod. Walter Raleigh landed his first tobacco shipment here, though not on these steps. The medieval bridge on the horizon would have been around though.
The town has a vape shop, so things haven't moved on much, but at least there's no known people trafficking.
