Teufelsgründ silver mine
(Münstertal, Black Forest, Germany)
A private tour of the mine takes us deep underground right to the old workface (closed 1958). From a small, unprepossessing adit, this shaft runs a kilometre straight into the the moutainside. The ore vein is almost vertical, so there are numerous other shafts cut through hundreds of metres above and below this main shaft which have been chiselled out since the first tiny tunnels were originally hand-cut by hand in medieval times.
