St. Peter in Chains cathedral

We were at a wonderful concert this evening in the magnificent Greek Revival style St. Peter in Chains cathedral downtown, featuring the British a capella group Voces8. As the name indicates, they are an octet, with 5 men and 3 ladies.They did a wonderfully varied program, including Renaissance music, and works by Benjamin Britten, Edward Elgar, Arvo Pärt and several present day composers. Their tonal blend, control and dynamics were all superb. We came back with a couple of their CDs they just happened to be selling!
As you enter the cathedral, you are immediately struck by the magnificent mosaic, shown in my blip, depicting the figure of Christ seated on a throne, extending his right hand in blessing, while with His left hand, extending the keys of authority to Saint Peter who kneels before Him.To the left, below the figure of Christ, the mosaic portrays the miraculous release of Saint Peter from the prison in Jerusalem. His deliverer, an angel, loosed his chains and led Him to freedom. In the opposite corner, the mosaic again portrays a prison scene, showing Saint Paul, the great preacher and symbol of the Church Militant, visiting Saint Peter in the Mamertine prison in Rome.
In the center, below the figure of Christ, a Latin text is inscribed: Et Petrus Quidem Se,vabatur in Carcere Vinctus Catenis which translates: And Peter was kept in prison, bound in chains. (Acts 12:5) The mosaic is built largely of Venetian glass.
So thankful this evening for the wonderful variety of terrific concerts and recitals we get to enjoy in the Cincinnati area.
Thankful too for finding some meter parking for $3.70 or so, quite close to the cathedral, instead of the $20 some of the multi storey parks were asking - I guess there were several big events going on last night!!
