Merkel marks Mauerfall

Today marks 30 years since the fall of the Berlin wall (Mauerfall), and the week of celebrations climaxed in an event in front of the Brandenburg Gate - a massive production involving two stages (in the "death strip" between the inner and outer walls), speeches by politicians entreating us to remember the events leading up to the construction and fall of the wall and to fight to preserve democracy and freedom, and a wide variety of music, dance and performances including a performance of Beethoven's 5th Symphony by The Staatskapelle conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

The event was attended by Angela Merkel, the German chancellor.  My extra shows that she is just as beholden to her mobile phone as anyone else.  (Is she texting Boris with a good joke about the EU? She seems to find it very amusing.)
