Crossbones graveyard

After staying the night in a very stylish Ibis hotel near Borough Market and nursing  a slightly sore head after a party last night, I went in search of a geocache called the Winchester Geese. This is the name given to prostitutes,  licenced by the Bishop of Winchester in medieval times to  work in the City of London, but not permitted to be buried in consecrated ground. So he created this graveyard for them. By the time it was closed in 1853 it contained the graves of 15000 paupers. Part of the graveyard was dug up for the Jubilee Line but what remains is now a garden of remembrance, open a few hours a day but not when I was there and it has become a local shrine. A very interesting spot hidden amongst the railway arches. Its amazing what you discover looking for geocaches.
