Learning Curve

My easy-clean with tray has generally been a success, but the Collared Doves have found it easy to access. I don't mind the odd one or two, but when the tally gets into double figures - well enough is enough. There are other feeders they can get to. I cobbled together a guard from some plastic-coated mesh and cable ties. which seemed to work pretty well. The tits took to it right away. The goldfinch persisted and eventually worked it out. The sparrows took a bit longer. The Collared Doves sat on the top and couldn't accept that it was inaccessible. and squatted on the top until the base worked loose and it all fell down. It started the doves and they flew off  so they didn't get the benefit of the spilled seed.
