Carter, Broomielaw

A picture taken in Nov. 1975 from my darkroom days with FP4 film in my first manual SLR camera fitted with a 135mm lens - a Pentax Spotmatic (film developed in ID11 1+1 for the technically--minded!)  The whisky barrels were being moved by horse and cart along the Broomielaw, Glasgow (digitised by means of the Photomyne app on my iPhone - how times have changed!).
The Clydesdale horse is Scotland’s indigenous breed of heavy draught horse. It takes its name from the upper reaches of the River Clyde (now known as South Lanarkshire). The breed was developed around 1700 and was capable of drawing 20-30 cwt in a single cart at walking pace. To do this, a certain springiness of stride was needed and was obtained through sound, big feet. Glasgow still keeps Clydesdales which appear at agricultural shows and summer events. They have a much nicer life now!
