Castle & Cathedral

Durham is one of the great experiences of Europe to the eyes of those who appreciate architecture, and to the minds of those who understand architecture. The group of Cathedral, Castle, and Monastery on the rock can only be compared to Avignon and Prague.

(Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, The Buildings of England)

It was lovely to be able have a walk around Durham in sunshine on Sunday. I took a lot of snaps.

This one is obviously of the castle and cathedral. As you can see they are built high up on rock, on what is referred to as 'the peninsula' - a loop in the River Wear - a position which offers topographical defenses. It also means that these two magnificent buildings are visible for miles around. Whichever direction you approach the city from, using whatever method of transport, they provide a familiar and welcoming sight.

This video is (I think) taken from the same bridge as my blip. The sound quality isn't amazing, but it provides something of the auditory experience of a Sunday afternoon in Durham.
