One hake of a day

This was a great day. Erin and Marc invited me on a drive around the Cape Peninsula, south of Cape Town. Before I arrived I was an ignoramus about the geography, thinking you could tick off all the sights in a few hours when actually it takes a full day to properly take in the fantastic vistas and wildlife of the region stretching from the city to Cape Point.

Highlights today were plentiful and included:
- the cutest scene of dassies and African penguins hanging on the beach at Simon’s Town, with crystal clear blue waters as the backdrop
- Chapman’s Peak Drive, the most scenic stretch of coastline (pictured) where we sat on a jutting ledge and drank a beer
- hake and chips at the popular Kalk Bay fish and chip shop - a local institution
- buying coffees for traffic policewomen who blew Mozambique’s traffic police out of the water with their friendliness
- the promise of humpback whales moving along the coast, on the horizon behind the raging white surf
- seals flopped in the harbour, blocking the path and displaying gashes from fights between males
- seals also perched on rocks in the distance, clinging on as the water crashed over them
