The end!

The saga of the Central Plaza Hotel in Carlisle is nearing the end. This picture taken this morning shows it . . . gone!

I blipped it here when it was covered in scaffolding, because it was unsafe, and I told the story thus far then. Since then the road has been closed, which has been difficult for traffic and devastating for local businesses. Carlisle City Council have been unable to do much, as the building is technically Crown Estate property, but at last it was deemed so unsafe that they had no choice. So, demolition has been taking place. I had not realised just what is involved with demolishing a building of this size. When we moved round to another viewpoint the Extra gives a better idea, as they are obviously having to dig down below to clear the cellars and foundations. It will be a long while before the site is clear. Then the Council hopes to sell the site for development and recoup some of the millions it has cost to maintain it and demolish it.

Our trip to Carlisle complete (a new phone might have been purchased!), we realised it was a lovely day and we set off for Caldbeck for lunch.
