EveryDay Ideas -15 Potholes

My street is full of potholes, even though it is a fairly major road. They are getting deeper and more numerous every day. It is fascinating to watch them grow, and how the cars, vans and lorries now swerve to avoid them. It is getting dangerous.

I think they are an indicator of the lack of investment in basic infrastructure. The local authority has had massive and unprecedented budget cuts over many years - finding it difficult to fund basic social services among other things like, health education and libraries.

So - how about using the number, frequency and severity of potholes as a modern metric of the state of disarray of our basic infrastructure and country. By my reckoning, we are in a pretty bad way. Is there a Geek out there who can use surveillance cameras, linked to digital recognition techniques, and statistical analytical software (data science, AI, and analytics) to provide a real time measurement and view of this?

Just a thought....
