Strong women

This is the Ella Pirrie statue,in the grounds of Belfast City Hospital.
Ella Pirrie was the first head nurse of the Belfast Infirmary, taking up the post in 1883. She went on to establish the first nursing school here.
She had earlier trained as a nurse with Florence Nightingale. The work was arduous and Nightingale wrote with concern at the stress she was under and inquiring after her ill health and lack of paid help.
She went on to become the first matron at the Deaconess Hospital, Edinburgh, established by Archibald Charteris as a training school for nurses.
My mum is receiving care from her colleagues, many decades on
Thanks to pioneering women!
