Bowerhill (Monday 20th January 2020)

My return to Bowerhill was sooner than expected and came about because having discovered on Sunday that the lens cap of my 28-105mm lens was not in my cagoule pocket or at the bottom of my camera bag I concluded that it must have been dislodged while changing batteries on a bench seat on Friday. There was a good chance it would still be there or close by, so I returned to the spot, which was near the start of the canal walk at Seend Park Swing Bridge No. 155, at Bowerhill, and from there I retraced my steps to Lowes Swing Bridge No. 157, on the way to Semington, and back, looking for it, but without success.

I did see the same swans again, though, and could not resist blipping them. The weather was clear and bright, though extremely cold, and rather gorgeous. Some of the gulls were standing on the frozen ice of the canal.

For the return leg of the walk I was accompanied a lot of the way by a kingfisher, darting from branch to branch, forward and back, on both sides of the canal; probably the best and longest kingfisher sighting I've had. It was too small for the longest focal length I had with me (the same as for my blip, an equivalent 157mm) but for proof here it is anyway, surprisingly sharp, considering.

In the mid-sixties Joni Mitchell was dating fellow-Canadian Leonard Cohen, who had written a song called Suzanne. Both of them were known more as songwriters than performers and neither had released a record. Joni Mitchell demoed a collection of songs, many of which remained unrecorded, and some of them have been collected by Christine Friis for her album The Quiet Of Knowing.  The Wizard Of Is was Joni Mitchell's response to Suzanne, as if she was the subject, but it wasn't considered for her debut album as she had used Leonard Cohen's melody.
