SAAM

The Seattle Asian Art Museum is just opening this weekend (sold out for 10,000 people!!?) after 2 years of renovation and building an addition. It's a 1930s art deco building that was the Seattle Art museum before the newer one was built downtown and this was relegated to the expansive Asian collection.    The neighborhood was quite vocal trying to block taking any more space out of Volunteer Park, the beautiful Olmstead city park where it sits.    But it got built…I think it wasn’t that much extra space but the glass walls in the new addition surely focus on the park and it’s magnificent trees.  It was quite crowded with members  (we had preview timed tickets)  but we mainly wanted to see the new part..and will go back to look at the art…….donned our rain gear for the 50 minute walk UP to Volunteer park and 40 minutes back down.  All in steady rain.   It was fun to run into some friends we haven’t seen for awhile…

extra, the bottom floor of the addition from a large conference/party room out to the stairway with these floral installations, and the park.   It will look more magnificent on a better weather day later in spring!!  There are some good photos and info on the SAAM website.
