Basseterre, St Kitts

We made our approach toward the port of Basseterre during the early hours of the morning.  St Kitts is the larger of the two Caribbean islands that comprise the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.  It's known for its rain forested mountains and beaches of white, grey and black sands.  On its south western coast is the capital Basseterre, and its colonial-era Georgian buildings.

We went ashore and walked around the town enjoying Independence Square which we had visited some years ago.  Independence Square formerly Pall Mall Square, was renamed on the 19th September 1983 to commemorate the independence of St Kitts and Nevis.  The stone fountain in the centre was erected to commemorate the introduction of pipe born water from Olivees into Basseterre in the 19th Century.

This evening we went to the theatre on the ship to see Celia & Julian
in an acrobatics show.  Very impressive.
