Funereal weirdness

We went down to Bunclody in Co. Wexford today for the funeral of a dear friend's father. Les had been hospitalised for a few months, came home for Christmas and collapsed suddenly and died on Friday.

I have vague memories of visiting Bunclody while growing up in Carlow town in the Irish midlands, but I have no memory at all of the walled-off stream which flows down the middle of the main street, nor of the very strange and cult-like figures we spotted there.

We were caught in the tail end of Storm Ciara on our way back, with strong winds and driving sleet buffeting the car. Generally speaking, though, we got off lightly compared with coastal areas in the west of the country. The wind and sleet came on while we were in the church grounds after the funeral mass and added an appropriate touch of atmosphere to the sad occasion.
