Pawns-of-all-Trades

The pawns are all in trouble,
the black pawns and the white.
They all get up to mischief
when they stay up late one night.

The other chessmen aren't around ꟷ
they've all gone out to see
a new film at the cinema,
which leaves the pawns quite free

to do whatever comes to mind,
so, soon, they're up to tricks:
"These look fun," one pawn declares
on finding lots of bricks.

"Let's build a house," a second pawn
suggests, "to suit us all."
Another adds, "There aren't enough.
We might just build a wall."

They set to work without delay,
now all has been decided.
"The others will be so surprised
to see the board divided."

The pawns can hardly lay the bricks,
they're laughing such a lot.
But this, I have to tell you,
is as far as they have got

when first the kings, and then the queens,
the bishops, knights and rooks,
arrive back home. They stare ꟷ in horror ꟷ
judging by their looks!

But soon they see the funny side
and, quickly, six or seven
older chessmen start to build
'a stairway up to heaven'!

"Bedtime!" say the queens at last,
(at least they don't sound bitter).
"And next time we go out at night,
we'll hire a baby-sitter!"

As Storm Dingbat-Dennis rages, and on Silly Saturday (thank you, admirer!), it seemed time for a new adventure of The Chessmen - their 44th, would you believe! Hope you enjoy it.

Meanwhile, thank you for all the lovely comments, stars and hearts on my last couple of blips. Much appreciated. Keep warm, dry and safe this wild weekend, all blipmates in the path of the storm.
