Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae

Tiritiri Matangi Backblip. This is the Red-Crowned Parakeet. This species, along with the other NZ parakeets, are called Kakariki by the Maori people. It has been extirpated from the New Zealand mainland and is only found on offshore islands. The Red-Crowned Parakeet was the very first species reintroduced to Tiritiri Matangi, providing an early model for Tiri's viability as an island sanctuary.
