Pit Head

Once a common site in this part of the world.

I think this is the only surviving headgear and winding engine in the north west of England, part of a little museum manned by volunteers and run by a charity.

This sight would once have been commonplace in an area full of collieries. They have all gone. And this survivor is now classified as a “scheduled monument” and “listed building”. It’s continued survival will depend on a lot of donations, I guess it needs a lot of work.
