A view from Jeanneb

Aurora.

This morning was lovely and sunny but with a much colder wind than we’ve had for the last two days.
Yesterday I had a phone call from the Royal Opera House to say my Backstage tour had been cancelled due to health advice but we could go for a general tour still if we wished.
Of course we did and it was excellent. It was a combination of three other tours available and included entering the auditorium during a rehearsal. They were rehearsing La Traviata and the young man had an excellent voice. The lady (presumably Violeta) was in a lovely costume but sadly didn’t sing whilst we were there.
We learned the history from the 18th century when the manager was also a performer and was responsible for the origin of the ‘slapstick’ and very interestingly, Pantomime.  There are three stages of the current building with a very modern recent addition where we later had lunch. The former Floral Hall in the centre is a great glass dome which can be hired.
We watched a video which showed how sets were built in Thurrock and then transported in large lorries which go into a vast lift to be taken up to stage level. They also showed how a complete set can be changed and moved in 20 minutes. Outside the auditorium are examples of ‘model boxes’ showing set designs, reputedly worth £8,000. The planning for a production starts 5 years in advance largely to ensure the artists are available.

Here the blip shows Margot Fonteyn’s tutu and headdress worn for Aurora, Sleeping Beauty. Two others are on display from Sleeping Beauty produced in 1946. Costumes are used for many years and this production was revived in 2006.
The Opera House’s aim today is to be open to all with it’s more accessible cafes, I think it works very well.
After lunch we had a tour around Covent Garden taking in Neal’s Yard - popped in to put a bit of hand cream on after all this hand washing!
Home now having had a great time. Always good to have a reason to return if only to complete that Back Stage Tour which should be back on in May. Need a rest before then!
