Circles

We decided, after much deliberation, to do our bit towards social distancing and did not go to Keswick and the three talks for which we had booked. I later got a phone call to say one of them had been cancelled anyway.

We did go to visit Long Meg and her Daughters, thinking that there would be no crowds of people there! And we wanted to remind ourselves of the rock art that we learnt about yesterday. Although there is an array of markings, it is quite hard to make out because of the weathered sandstone, but on the picture you should be able to see at least two concentric circles.

Long Meg was looking rather splendid in the late afternoon sunshine. She stands outside the stone circle and is of a different rock (see extra). Our lecturer yesterday was making an interesting case for her (Long Meg!) having been brought from one of the sandstone cliffs of the River Eden.

I have been here so many times, but the circle itself never fails to impress. It is a huge circle, one of the largest, with around 68 stones. It is more impressive even than Castlerigg, but it is not looked after at all. However, that does mean that you almost certainly get it to yourself.
