A different view

I have never taken this view of the Eden and the bridge at Appleby, because it has not been possible before now to access this bank.

I discovered yesterday that we had run out of dishwasher tablets - disaster! So unlike me, as I usually have everything in, but these things happen. And it did mean that I had an excuse to visit our new Co-op. It may seem strange that I am making such a thing of something as mundane as a Co-op, but it is so rare that there is any new building round here and I have been impressed with the care that has been taken to make sure this one fits in with its surroundings.

Then it is so modern and spacious inside - I was impressed. It will be a huge asset for local people. It also has a car park, which is great. This photo was taken from the car park. It shows how high and fast the river was flowing after an overnight snowfall caused melted snow to be brought down from the fells.

I think it was around this time last year that many of us got a bit jittery, thinking something serious was happening. The virus situation was officially a pandemic and we were beginning to wonder what the implications were. Earlier in the week we had been to talks at 'Words by the Water' in Keswick, but by the end of the week we decided not to attend the talks that we had booked - it just didn't seem a sensible thing to do. We were already talking about social distancing, as we went to a place where we knew there would be no one else. Such a shame that we had only been told to wash our hands (whilst singing Happy Birthday!) and it was going to be another ten days before we were actually locked down. A disastrous delay it turned out to be.

Gordon seems to be quite happy this evening - seems he’s watched an excellent game of Rugby and Carlisle have come good at last.
