St Stephen's Anglican Church, Newtown

St Stephen's Church was designed by architect Edmund Blacket and completed in 1874. It is built of sandstone in the gothic revival style and its extensive grounds are home to an historic graveyard. It includes graves for the 121 passengers and crew who died in the 1857 wreck of the merchant ship the Dunbar at South Head, Sydney, and the grave of Eliza Donnithorne, who died in 1886, and who may have been Charles Dickens' inspiration for the character Miss Havisham in the novel Great Expectations.

The extra is of a Moreton Bay fig tree, planted in 1848, and the colonial neo-gothic Cemetary Lodge.

Thank you Steveng for hosting.
