all things being equal

The big idea (remember?) that I had for this year's Spring equinox was to visit Stonehenge. I had booked the trains from Salisbury to London and back, a hotel and a bus to the Visitor Centre. Best laid plans, eh?

Instead, we visited a local Megalithic site which was unlikely to be crowded.  Cairnholy 1 and 2, in Galloway, are chambered cairns built between 6,000 and 4,000 years ago. They are up on a hill overlooking Wigtown Bay.

We did meet somebody up there - Cairnholy Joe! A man who has devoted the last 12 years of his life, and moved here from the USA, to study Cairnholy and its relationship to the sun, moon and surrounding landscape. Joe told us about this special equinoctal day and how the shadows of the stones would move as we approached midday. He talked while taking hundreds of photos with his phone. You can see this in one of the extras.

We stayed in this amazing place for about two hours. You Know What seemed far away.
