Friday in Djibouti

We spent 3 hours driving through moon-like terrain to get to the project site in Tadjourah. The drive was gorgeous but stark! Undulating hills covered with rocks and dotted with the most wild acacia-type trees. Over one hill and around another bend and then you have an emerald-coloured lake or a glimpse of the startling blue ocean.

But what a life. During the journey you would occasionally see a line of yellow and blue plastic barrels sitting by the side of the road and some stone 'huts' and voila, a community. Apparently the government sends lorries filled with water every so often and this is how these communities get their water.

You occasionally see young men walking in the distance over the rocky terrain. I was informed that these are potential refugees: leaving their lives in Ethiopia, walking through Djibouti and hopefully making it across the sea to Yemen. It is tragic, if you ask me, as I am not sure there is any better life waiting or them in Yemen.

But the photos from yesterday did not capture any of what is described above...or rather, the photo I liked best was taken in town before we left. You see, we left at about 10:00 in the morning and returned at dusk. So the lighting during this time was not the best and because the car was filled with people who do not appreciate stopping every 10 minutes to take photos, we barreled on and got the job done. The home for the kids is coming along beautifully while the kindergarten should be ready in a few months.

OK..enough! Enjoy the photo from Djibouti town. Friday is the weekend here so very little activity. But I loved the kids arguing on the left, the dude hangin' out on the street corner on the right and then there is the Madam Purple sauntering down the street in a very relaxed manner...all against the back drop Djibouti city centre....enjoy!
