Root Down, Build Soil

This is my first offering here!

My wife Melanie plants fava beans in the garden every fall. She has propagated these seed for years. The original ones were a gift to her from a friend, years ago. They grow quietly through the winter, and have just come into bloom. As a cover crop, they improve the soil texture, suppress the weeds,  and support microbials in the earth.

This quiet work of supporting the earth all happens underground. I'm struck by this right now, in the time of pandemic, where we are called, for the good of all, to burrow into our homes. We are, in our quietude, sowing the possibility for the survival of life and wellness for the whole.
