Dirt(y) Roads

Dirt roads are fine for most of the year, in places without much traffic, but as winter comes to an end they can become problematic. The surface thaws out but deeper down is still frozen so the water doesn't drain away. As the deep frost thaws out the road heaves, developing humps and dips.
This road is at the bottom of our hill and we usually use it if we are headed north. However just now we drive an extra 3 km, using a surfaced road instead. The orange markers show a particularly deep dip and are a warning to slow down. The speed limit here is 70 kmh, but in practice it's more like 20 kmh just now!
You can imagine how dirty a car gets driving over roads like this. Even walking, as I was when I took this picture, you end up with very grubby boots!
