Crazy About Birds

Red Trillium

VERY excited to discover this growing right in front of our porch, where I planted it early last summer. It's a wildflower - and the only time I've actually seen it in the woods where it is usually found is every year at the end of April/beginning of May when I go to West Virginia for the New River Birding & Nature Festival. But - of course - that ain't happening this year. Anyway - I bought a couple of trillium plants from a lovely young lady who - with her brother-  started a nursery that is located right in the little town of Free Union, where I live. She started up last year, and I visited and discovered that her aim is to have native plants pretty much exclusively. I thought "what the heck?" and purchased a few things just to see what would happen. I had been looking at the spot where I remembered putting the trillium and seeing nothing, and not being particularly surprised at my failure, and then today I was sitting on the edge of the porch, chatting with #1 son who had driven out from Charlottesville with our granddog, Jezebel (Corgi), when I glanced down and WHAM my eye was caught by a BLOOMING TRILLIUM!!! Well damn! Its bloom was facing down at a rather awkward angle for the photo, but who cares? I wonder if the other one (two??) I planted will emerge? I expect this bloom will open further in the next few days. You may see it again.

The extras are #1 son and the lovely Jezebel with the ball that is her ball and lives here for her to play with when she visits. The Husband and I kept a proper distance from #1 son, but I confess not much distance from Jezebel. Did wash our hands after they left though.
