Refocus

Back to the home-based grindstone today after a lovely Easter weekend.

Already and despite the anticipated lockdown extension on Thursday, the company I work for is asking for a re-assessment of how our 2020 will look post-virus. It’s an interesting, if entirely speculative question, as it is the same enquiry that most people around the world will be posing to themselves.

Our business is entirely dependent on protecting the businesses of others, so assuming that they are still there Anno Covidi, we may be a little down on projections, but broadly OK.

What if the economy tanks? The self-employed unable to bounce back? Prolonged period of recession? The numbers we put up may prove to be largely immaterial, particularly if I don’t have a job anymore!

My very simple belief (and not at all based in science, knowledge or past experience) is that once the handbrake is fully taken off, most aspects of our former lives will very rapidly click back into gear. Those lucky enough to have been paid throughout this passage of time will be looking to spend that money on a holiday, going out or generally treating themselves to experiences and things, thus re-creating the jobs that may have been lost in the intervening time.

Period of hardship to follow? Absolutely. End of days? Definitely not.

As George Harrison once gently sang “All things must pass”.

The positive news it that this applies to both the good and the bad stuff.

Stay healthy

P.S. No, I still have no idea what my revised numbers are going to look like and I’m not sure quoting song lyrics will go down at all well with the powers-that-be.
