Which English Classic Springs To Mind ?

"At reunification at the end of 1990, the city had a stock of roughly 370,000 street trees; today, there are approximately 431,000 trees lining Berlin's streets, or around 20,000 more than the prewar total." 
+ note there are more trees in many forests but these are included in  a link to a map of Germany.....Suffice to say they are numerous  ..
The above is near where I live and my favourite tree.( though haven't seen all ) It reminds me of my GCE English Literature exam reading . 
Who can guess author and title ?
