It's cocktail time in Ottawa

We decided it was time to institute an official Apéritif Hour in the Ottawacker household. As the days get longer and the time spent in self-isolation seems not to grow commensurately shorter, the work demands on all three of us seem to be ratcheting up.

And so, over a hastily arranged lunch yesterday, following my successful return from the hunting expedition, it was decided that we would have a five-course meal the next day: apéritif, starter, main course, cheese and dessert.

And so we started with mocktails for the children, finger foods of Polish and Hungarian sausage, Goldfish and gluten-free crackers; warm salads (garlic and ginger shrimp); chicken and potatoes, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, sweet potato… and then we stopped. As the cheese course was a sliver of Black Mountain, it was probably time. And then the unthinkable happened: Ottawacker Jr. stated he wanted to go for a bike ride rather than have dessert.

I blame the City of Ottawa for this. Ottawacker Jr. has discovered that if he runs quickly enough, he can register his speed on the speed monitoring cameras on the next street. So as he and I were going for a constitutional this morning, he sprints off to see what he can record: 20 km/h. Obviously, I had to try too – and to his great amusement, I failed to register a score. Ever since, he has been calculating how he can get a higher score. He changed his shoes, took off a layer of clothing – and so when Mrs. Ottawacker took him out for his post-dinner-dessert-replacement exercise, he went off and managed to record an impressive 22 km/h.

This is progress. Still not content, however, he plans to return tomorrow on his bike and see what he can do. How far can he go without breaking the law?
