Not just flowers

This Sunday will be the seventh Sunday in which we have not met in the church building. It’s been a good experience for the church to remember that it isn’t dependent upon a building to define it. That down through the ages the church hasn’t always had a building to meet in.

Our present building is seventy years old and aging quickly now, but she is beloved.

We do what we can to keep it in good order but we’ve not been worshipping here for weeks. So you would think it remains unchanged. You would be mistaken.

We have a Dutch lady who works to keep the front interesting and beautiful for worship. I was expecting her to stop the care when we stopped meeting. But I was wrong.

She continues to decorate each week. Through Easter and into this new time. I discovered these flowers and setting when I arrived yesterday.

In that act she holds forth hope that one day soon the church will return to worship. It’s her act of faith. Her declaration of trust that God holds it all, somehow.

I am humbled by her care and faith.

One might say they are just flowers, but I would have to say that “One” would be wrong.
