Sir Thomas Sopwith

Day 62- Cycled to Cobham and another blue plaque for Sir Thomas Sopwith( 1888-1989). He was a wealthy sportsman with an interest in aviation, yachting and motor racing. He formed the Sopwith Aviation company aged 24 initially based at Brooklands and then in Kingston. They made military aircraft, the Sopwith Pup(1916) and the Sopwith Camel (1917). He lived in the very large Compton House in Cobham during this period. In 1920 he became involved with a new business with Harry Hawker, he became chairman of Hawker aircraft , later Hawker Siddeley.
Many more cars on the roads and ice cream vans outside Hampton Court!
