Beneath Biscay

My wife was woken at 5am to the news that her mother had passed away. She went into hospital having had a stroke just as lockdown began. Later she was moved to a care home but then about a week ago she was taken back to another hospital. The death wasn't unexpected as she had a cancer. She didn't have Covid-16 although that did prevent the family form visiting her in the first hospital and in the care home. This was worse because she lost her language ability a few years ago to an earlier stroke so we knew she couldn't communicate and didn't have any familiar faces around her.

Fortunately in her final days my wife and my wfe's sister were allowed to visit on alternate days which was a relief for them to be able to say their goodbyes, even though by then she was pretty much unconscious.

So it was up to the chapel of rest for 8:30 am to deal with the paperwork. Tomorrow morning she will be cremated and then in the afternoon we'll take the ashes to the Ceares cemetery. There's to be no funeral for now because gatherings are limited to 10 people. So that will have to wait until things return a bit more to normal.

In truth, while it is of course sad and the lockdown made it more stressful, at least we knew for some time it was coming, which makes it easier to deal with.
