Unwanted visitors in my garden

I found these strange creatures today when trying to organize my garden.  I think they are the seed heads (?) of a very invasive plant aiming to take over the entire garden.  I did my best to get rid of them, but it is a very unfair battle. I brought them inside to take a macro photo of them.  Anyone that knows what it is?
