Beneath Biscay

Passing Poo

No,. Not that!

Today Asturias moved to phase 2 of lockdown lifting. Previously under phase 1 we could go anywhere in Asturias but only within the prescribed hours of 6-10 am and 8-11pm which ruled out excursions.

Now the time restriction is lifted and I had the day off, so we decided to do a coast walk from the town of Llanes to the village of Celorio, about 4.5 km to the west, as the crow flies.

As far as possible on the outward leg we followed the edge of the cliffs. Halfway along we arrived at the hamlet of Poo, which sits beside  a lovely small secluded sand-filled estuary.

There were very few people out and about. Llanes is in the far east of Asturias, not far from the border with neighbouring Cantabria. Many of its properties in the area are second homes belonging to Cantabrians and the next-door-but-one Basques. However people are still not allowed to travel out of their home provinces without a good justification so most are shuttered.

Lack of people and beautiful weather made it a perfect first post-lockdown outing..

As for "Poo" it's actually just a local contraction of "pueblo", meaning "town" or "village" and it's pronounced po-oo. In Asturias I think it's spelled just Po. No connection to the Teletubbies, as far as I know.

Managed to get a bit sunburned as well.
