Mail

This morning I was busy crafting a reply to a concerned voter who wants to know when she will next be able to travel to visit her partner at the other end of the country. As I was trying to find a nice way to say “who knows” the snail mail arrived.

We got one item - Northlink Ferries’ report on its community engagement activity last year. Northlink delivers ferry services between Orkney and Shetland and the mainland. The report is full of wonderful pictures of happy smiling groups of faces. Crowds too. Can you imagine? Crowds!

How fast things change.

Orkney Rugby Club is grounded. They will not be training, never mind heading to the mainland for matches. The agricultural shows have been cancelled. School visits to the ships – no, not now.

When will it be safe to take a ferry again? Can you imagine the task of disinfecting a ferry (with sleeping berths) after each journey? That is what they are doing now, but with passengers restricted to lifeline services the ships will not be busy.
