Gyr falcon

Falco rusticolus.

This isn't a great shot but this bird is a very rare visitor to the UK and the first I've ever seen. This one seems to be a juvenile white morph so it may be from Iceland or even further afield.
It was reported in the Stromness area yesterday and there were updates online this morning so I headed out on the bus. I walked along the road and saw it sitting in a field. Three hooded crows were mobbing it and it flew around a fair bit- at one point landing on a fencepost nearby. At another point it swooped on a brown hare. Later other people turned up to see it and we watched as it drifted across an area of heather. A woman was walking a dog and, as it bounced through the rough cover, the falcon seemed to shadow the dog. It may have been hoping the dog would flush a snipe or grouse.
