On 15 June 1984 we drove from Galway in the west of Ireland to Dublin in the east via the wonderful Clonmacnoise. It was a cloudy and cool day and we were the only visitors there. It was magical. My notes from the time are sketchy but I think this is the original four-metre high Cross of the Scriptures built c900. In 1991 a new visitors centre was opened and the original cross is now protected in there. A replica stands now where the original stood in 1984.
