On this day in history, Valentina Tereshakova became the first woman in space, orbiting the Earth 48 times in almost three days on board Vostok 6, almost twenty years to the day ahead of the first U.S. woman in space, Sally Ride, mission specialist on board the space shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983.
