Minster of the Moors

Spent the night with old friends in Silkstone, a small village in Yorkshire. This morning, walked across the High Street to their parish church, for a lovely service with a sparky lady vicar. In the pew in front (the pews even had doors!) was a 101yr old lady, and behind us a 1 yr old girl - amazing to think a century separated them.

The most poignant window was made by the community to celebrate the lives of 26 local children from 7 to 17 years old, who were killed in the Huskar Pit disaster in July 1858. In the waves at the bottom of the window are the names of the children and their ages.

It was because of this disaster that the young Queen Victoria ordered an investigation into the conditions of children working in the mines, and Lord Shaftesbury led a successful campaign to change them.
