Momma Hen and Her Two Chicks

Here is the latest picture of the chicks. They are both doing really well and even compete with momma for the dried worm snacks.
Our barred rock, who doesn't hang out with the other chickens, has made a nest behind the boxwoods beside our front door and stays on it. She must think her eggs will hatch, but since she hasn't gone near the roosters, that is unlikely.  Last night when we got home from fishing, our son was reaching into the bushes with a grabber. He told us to stay in the truck. He said that as he was going into the side door he noticed a snake sunning itself on the bench that is on the side door porch. When he jumped off the porch, the snake climbed up the door, then went into the nearby boxwoods where the hen is nesting. Our son was trying to flush the snake out to protect the hen. He never did catch the snake (probably the same rat snake that has been hanging around in our driveway. I sprinkled Snake Stopper across the steps to the porch and around the boxwoods. It smells like cinnamon, and doesn't seem to bother the hen. I hope it works!
