Roots

First a p.s. from yesterday’s geology blip. One or two said they might like to buy the Arnside Geotrail booklet. (Costs £3).
For the best place to go to online to obtain one go to: shop.landscapetrust.org.uk

Today’s blip shows the roots of a fine Beech tree next to one of the footpaths round the base of Arnside Knott. It demonstrates how thin the soil is in places. The roots are able to penetrate cracks and break up the limestone in places.
The log on the ground next to the tree is part of a large branch which fell off sometime in the past year or two. Old, large Beech trees are known for suddenly shedding branches.
