Street Names

Have you ever looked at a street name and thought, "Why that name?"
Local to me are some really strange ones. Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate must be the strangest (first mentioned in 1505 meaning something like neither here nor there.  The old English name of gate means street and most of the streets in York end in "gate.")
Why Priestman's Lane and not just Vicar Street?
Some are more obvious like Tanpit Lane (a tannery used to be there) and Gibbet Hill, but not so sure about, "The Nookin"!
